The Brighton Wrestling program added another highly qualified coach to the staff this week, as Kyle Hansen, who was previously Head Assistant Coach at Ohio University, will be joining the Bulldog coaching staff.

Hansen spent 10 years coaching at Ohio University where he helped guide 24 individuals to being NCAA Division 1 Qualifiers and mentored 4 NCAA DI All-Americans during his tenure.  Prior to that he spent 3 years as the University of Northern Iowa’s Wrestling Program Conditioning Coach.  During his time at UNI the Panthers had 3 Top 25 finishes at the NCAA Division I National Championships with 24 NCAA Qualifiers and 6 NCAA DI All-Americans.

“Words cannot describe how fortunate we are as a program to have someone of Kyle’s caliber joining us,” said Head Coach Tony Greathouse. “He comes in with an amazing wealth of experience and knowledge not only with high level technique, but also with working with athletes and helping them reach their goals on the mat and in the classroom.  I can’t wait to get in the room with him everyday so our wrestlers can learn from him, but also so that myself and the rest of our staff can improve and continue to grow as coaches.”

As a competitor, Hansen wrestled for the University of Northern Iowa where he was a 2x NCAA Division I All-American and 3x Academic All-American.  He amassed 80 varsity wins during his tenure at UNI and was ranked as high as 5th in the country during his senior season.

“It is pretty rare to get an NCAA All-American on a high school coaching staff, and the fact that Kyle was also an Academic All-American makes it even more exciting that our wrestlers get to work with him on a daily basis this season,” said Greathouse.

Hansen and his wife Carolyn, a Brighton High School grad and former BHS standout soccer player, reside in Brighton with their three young children.  Coach Hansen is also joining the Brighton High School staff as a member of the School Security Staff.

Hansen will join Coach Greathouse’s already stellar staff, along with returning BHS coaches Chris Collins, Leif Olson, Corbin Boone, Adam Olney, JJ Johnson, and Jordan Thomas.  His addition gives the Bulldogs an impressive 5 coaches who wrestled for Division 1 College Programs: Hansen (Northern Iowa), Greathouse (Michigan State), Boone (Cleveland State), Thomas (Univ of Michigan), and Johnson (Eastern Michigan).
